Prior to the signing of the momentous document, The Declaration of Independence of 1776, a long history of study and discussion on the principles of Liberty and the role of government had been surfacing in the American colonies and in Europe. As any student of history knows, in the latter half of the 17th century Great Britain's policy of increased interference and the domination of its colonies gave definition to the debate on liberty and government. During this time men began to organize from out of their own local communities, forming groups to discuss these principles. The first reference made to these groups as "Sons of Liberty" came from Isaac Barre, a member of parliament, in a speech before the House of Commons supporting less control of the American colonies. The name stuck. These men, when organized and assembled, helped call the first Continental Congress as an attempt to bring understanding between the Crown and the colonies.

In a similar spirit we have called our newsletter the Sons of Liberty to honor and to seek the same ideals that those patriots sought. The Sons of Liberty is published on a monthly basis.
